Remembering Norm McInnis

The LGMA was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our BC local government colleague Norm McInnis. Norm was most recently the CAO for the District of Sooke, where he will be fondly remembered by his colleagues. “Norm was more than a dedicated public servant; he was a pillar of our community who will forever be intertwined with the spirit of Sooke,” said Sooke Mayor Maja Tait.

Norm was a dedicated supporter of the sector since he started his local government career in 2001 when he served as a CAO in both Alberta and British Columbia. He was dedicated in supporting the advancement of local governments, serving on the LGMA Board of Directors from 2020-2022. Norm was integral in assisting the LGMA to maintain operations through the worst of the pandemic and was always available to be of support to his colleagues in local government. Norm was a dedicated contributor to the LGMA, having presented at CAO Forum, the MATI® Advanced Communications program, and other important efforts to build up the capacity of his peers. He will be remembered by his colleagues for his love for his beautiful family, his dedication as a public servant, and his love for the outdoors (especially on a motorcycle).

The District of Sooke has written a beautiful tribute to Norm that we would like to honour.

Remembering their friend, here’s what some of Norm's colleagues had to say about him:

"I had the pleasure of meeting Norm when he was CAO in Fernie and I was nearby in Kimberley. I loved Norm's approach to the position: deeply intellectual but balanced with a heartfelt passion for helping the community. He will be missed."

"We are so saddened to hear about the passing of Norm. Our sincere condolences to his family, friends and community."
